In the waiting time

Life has continued to be very busy, but in the midst of it all there are still moments when things slow down a bit....when it seems we are doing nothing, only waiting. But God is in those times, too, and often has a purpose to accomplish.

On my way back home from taking care of some business, I plopped myself down on a bus stop bench to catch my breath while waiting for the #22 to arrive.  An older gentleman took the place next to mine, and we exchanged a polite greeting...I searched in my mind for how to continue the conversation. As it was already past the bus's scheduled arrival time, I commented that it looked like it was going to be rather late.  He laughed and said the bus is often late, but that's OK since it would give us time to talk. Apparently we were both looking for a chat!

Finding a listening ear in a total stranger, the man poured his heart out to me about the pain and difficulties of life; he told me of the hopelessness he felt in the face of daily visits to his wife, who lay in an institution lost in a haze of dementia.  Frustrated about the state of things in his country, many times he had dreamed of leaving in search of happier times elsewhere. "But how could I leave my wife here lying in her bed. She really wouldn't know I was gone since she doesn't recognize me any more...but I still know who she is and I can't leave her."

I shared of the hope we can find in God even in dark times, and he said that he had tried churches, had visited several places and come away empty. Only one was mentioned by name, the Jehovah's Witnesses. Sadly enough that's not the only religious meeting place where the Good News is lacking. I shared with him that unfortunately not everyone is preaching truth, but that we can know God from His Word, the Bible.

There was a lot more to say, more listening to be done, but suddenly the bus arrived and the conversation was over. Praise God for how He uses "chance" encounters to sow Gospel seeds...and pray for this gentleman, that he will soon find hope and new life in Christ!

Thank you to those who give through the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering and the Cooperative Program, allowing us to be here in Hungary sharing Christ. Your offerings also paid for our language studies, making possible countless encounters with people who have limited or no knowledge of English. We are grateful.

Catch-up time

Whew--it's good to be home again after being out and about a lot over the past two months!  We've had a great time, both in ministry, training conferences, in meetings with team members and ministry partners, and also in precious days with visiting family members.  Now we are busy looking through emails and catching up on to-do list items.

Please pray with us:

  • Gary's mom has started chemo treatments, and she, Dad, and all the family appreciate prayers very much.
  • Lift up Curtis Smith, who is here right now teaching about container gardening.  Ask for many opportunities for him to share his faith as well as assisting people to know how best to grow food for their families.
  • Lift up a national believer and friend who is in urgent need of a new job that will pay enough that he can reunite his family.  He is currently working long days, 6 days/week, but it is not enough to support the family.
  • Pray for the twice-a-month Wednesday night discipleship group members to live out what they are learning & to pass on the lessons to others, as well as sharing Jesus with lost friends and family members.
  • Ask for wisdom for us re: the brand new discipleship group started on the alternate Wednesday evenings; should we keep it on this night, or change to Sunday evenings - ?  Pray this small group will grow both in numbers and in spiritual understanding.
  • Pray for the Tiszafüred church plant to be encouraged and move forward in spiritual growth, obedience and outreach.  Ask that the lost friends coming will soon become followers of Jesus.
  • Every day we are seeing new opportunities for ministry open up, and we need wisdom from the Lord as to which things to do, which things to pass on to others, and which things to say "no" to.  This is very hard!
  • Lift us up, as we are feeling very tired, that we would live each day in the grace He gives: "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." (2 Cor. 12:9)
We appreciate your prayers very much!   Also a huge "thank you" to those of you who give to support missions around the world through the Cooperative Program and the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering.

Praying for Europe, and thank you

Map of Europe - OpenClipArt.org
The Lord is doing incredible things here in Hungary and all throughout Europe, but whenever God is working, there are also opposition and difficulties...a spiritual battle is going on for the hearts of the people. Prayer is key in all that we do, and we ask for your help.  Please join us in praying daily for the people of Europe!

The personnel in our area are currently praying together using a special forty-day prayer guide; each day has a short Scripture verse tied to a one-sentence prayer...if you would like to join us, download it from my Google Docs here.

Thank you so much for your prayer support, as well as your sacrificial giving through the Cooperative Program and the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering.  We appreciate all of you who pray, give, and come to help.  If you are interested in the possibility of coming as a short-term volunteer, please contact us for details.

To those who give through the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering...a special "Thank you" from IMB workers in Europe:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--wdY4nVlpU

Pacikert Mission Church's community outreach day

It's a beautiful, sunny day here in Debrecen, and the community outreach at the Pacikert mission is going on as I type this.  The people from the neighborhood are enjoying lots of fun activities including music, face-painting and pony rides.  Believers are there to make friends, answer questions, and share their faith.  Our teammember Darrel Hathcock and his family are on hand with other friends and volunteers to distribute Bibles from a booth near the stage area--pray for good communication and many opportunities to share. Later in the afternoon there will be a special time of live Christian music and preaching.
Pray with us that God will move in a mighty way to forge new connections with people and draw them to new life in Him.  Pray that the Bibles that are given away will be read, changing lives.

Mission pastor Csaba and his wife Marika give glory to God for the opportunities of the day

Thank you for keeping us on the field!

Praise the Lord for those who faithfully give through the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions and the Cooperative Program - your gifts keep us on the field, and we are grateful.  What a privilege to be able to be here and see first-hand how God is working to change lives, and what a blessing it is to be a part of it!

Although the 2012 Lottie Moon offering--finalized last week--fell short of the national goal, it was still the 3rd largest in our history!  Thank you to all of you who partner with us in giving, praying, and going to reach the world for Christ.

May month of prayer - Day 31: IMB Eastern Hungary Team missionaries

It's hard to believe we've reached the last day of May, and with it the final day of this special month of prayer for eastern Hungary.

Today please pray for us, the missionaries of the Eastern Hungary Team.  Pray that we will stand strong in our relationships with Christ and each other, and that as we serve Him we will never let the task of "serving" overshadow our love for the One we serve.  Pray that team unity will continue to grow, and that we will have wisdom and strength for each day.  Pray that we will see each other and the precious people that we serve with God's eyes, and always be prepared to give a witness for our Lord.

Thank you so much for praying with us and for us!

May month of prayer - Day 28: Tokaj / Ouachita Baptist team update

Tokaj, a beautiful town world-famous for its wine, is today's prayer focus.  Pray that Tokaj's people will come to faith in Christ and be connected to the Vine; pray that they will know a great outpouring of the Holy Spirit, empowering them to love and serve the many who come to their historic community as tourists and businessmen.

For more, see the online prayer calendar.

The Ouachita Baptist University volunteer team has been making a great impact as they share through music and drama around our area.  Praise the Lord, four of the youth from the Friday night event at the children's home in Pacikert came to the Pacikert mission Sunday (a church plant by national believers from Debrecen Baptist Church).

As I type this, the Ouachita team is on their way to Karcag to give a presentation at a school.  Pray that the Lord will speak to the hearts of the young people.

Busy times...Gary preaching today

We're in the midst of very busy times here as we prepare for our 5-month Stateside Assignment..I'm sorry I haven't been able to keep up with updating you all very well.  I do have pictures and more prayer requests that I'll post when I can.  Right now we are getting ready to leave for Kaba, where Gary will be preaching at an event at the small Baptist church.  Please pray that the Lord will speak through him in spite of his exhaustion, and that He will give Gary the ability to communicate clearly what's on his heart (never easy to do in Hungarian even when well-rested and perky!)

Thanks for praying for us, and also a big thank you to those of you who give through the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, which makes it possible for us to remain here and do the work that we do.  You all are a blessing, and we appreciate you!

Baseball / the Mikepércs Mosquitos win the game!

When we lived in America we always enjoyed baseball, and now and then we still get the chance to re-awaken those memories - but with a slight Hungarian flavor!  Last week Russell Chun of  Good Sports International  had to be out of town and asked Gary to help coach the Mikepércs Mosquitos, a new team he's been working with.  It was just the kids' third game ever, and they were scheduled to play a friendly game with a very strong team, the Debrecen Tigerkids.  Amazingly, the Mosquitos played with great heart and surprising skill for such a young team...and they won!  Congratulations, Mosquitos!

Speaking of baseball, a volunteer team from Cross Timber Baptist Church  in Burleson, Texas will be coming this summer to hold a baseball camp in the town of Puspokladany from May 18 to 23.  Please be praying for them as they prepare to come, and that the Lord will even now be working in the hearts of those who will be attending the camp.  CTBC will also be sending a team later in the summer--they will be holding an English camp in Hajduszoboszlo from July 6 to 12.  We pray that God will be glorified, and that many hearts will be touched during both the baseball camp and the English camp.  A big thank you to our friends at Cross Timber for their missions outreach around the world.

An amazing project, an amazing year, all because of our amazing God!

I've sat down several times to write this update on the Scripture distribution in Nádudvar, but I just can't seem to find words to describe to you what happened (without writing a whole book about it!)  It was truly amazing...I really shouldn't be surprised, because I know God is totally able to do above and beyond anything we can imagine.  He is so good!

First of all, we weren't working alone...we had the help of Hungarian believers from three different churches:  Istvan from our church here in Debrecen, Pastor Tibor from Hajudszoboszlo, and Janos from Puspokladany.  We got to Nádudvar at 5:45 and set up while it was still dark. We had a great location in the market, right next to the entrance.

Janos, Istvan, Pastor Tibor and Gary

We had been concerned about the weather since the forecast had called for snow, but although the streets were slick when we got there, when the sun came out it melted off and was a beautiful (though chilly) day.

The first Bible we gave out was to one of the vendors who had seen us before at other markets.  After we set up our table, Gary began to prayerwalk through the market, praying for the other vendors who were preparing for the day.  As he was walking by one couple setting up their booth, the man greeted Gary and asked, "Do you still have any of those Bibles?"  Gary said that's what we were there for--we were having another Bible distribution.  The man said, "I'd like to get one this time."  He went on to say that he'd tried to read the Bible before. He said he got up to the point of Noah and couldn't understand why God wiped out the whole world, which triggered a discussion on the sinfulness of man. The man was full of questions; things like, who was Noah anyway?  Why did God choose him?  Why was he special?  After talking with the man for a while, Gary went and got the Bible.  He  and Pastor Tibor went back to deliver the Bible and to see if he had further questions.  The man just greeted the Hungarian pastor...he had already used up all his hard questions on the American missionary, and all he had left for Pastor Tibor was, isn't the weather nice?

Among the first people who received a Bible at our booth was a lady who accepted it in wonder and disbelief, saying that she'd always wanted one; she left hugging it to her chest lovingly as if it were a little baby.  That encounter alone made the whole thing worthwhile!  Here in the town that everyone had been calling a "tough nut" because of the strong communist influence, person after person happily accepted a Bible and promised to read it.  There were some who passed by with bitter words of rejection, but they were very much in the minority.  In fact, the response was so fantastic that by 10 a.m. we had run out of whole Bibles and had only New Testaments left to distribute.

Pastor Tibor talking with a man who had a lot of questions.  The little girls in the background are eating langos [LAHN-gosh], a delicious, puffy, greasy fried bread with your choice of cheese, sour cream, garlic, or all three.  Gary had garlic and cheese, so the Hungarians told him he couldn't talk to the people after that.  I was very restrained and spiritual, however, and had only cheese!

Pastor Tibor and Janos in conversation with another man who had interesting and strange questions and comments about the Bible.  Even here in this small town there is influence from the cults and other religions.  I was so glad we had Hungarian believers there with us who could deal with this so much better than we could as foreigners!

One man signs his commitment card to try to read the Bible through, while another man chooses which Bible he would like to take home.

We had asked people to pray that we would be able to give out all of the Bibles, and the response from the people went above and beyond what we had hoped.  After we ran out of whole Bibles we had more people stop by who really wanted one, so we came home with several names and addresses; we'll be either mailing or taking one to them as soon as we can.  In all we gave out 194 whole Bibles, 65 children's Bible's, and 65 New Testaments, for a total of 324.  Praise the Lord, that's the most we've given out in a day's time all this year!  As we close out the Year of the Bible in Hungary, we are still amazed at the power of God, at how He loves each of us and wants us to know Him and live in relationship with Him.

Special thanks to those who give to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering and the Cooperative Program, which provide the funding that keeps us here on the field; we also want to express our appreciation again to those individuals and churches who gave special gifts to make the purchase of the Bibles possible--you gave above and beyond what we had prayed for, and the Lord used it to multiply the seeds of Scripture that we have sown all around the area this year!

And last but not least, thank you to all of you who have been praying for the Hungarian people, and for us as we serve here in eastern Hungary.  God bless you, and Merry Christmas!
